It includes around 240 species of aromatic herbs or shrubs, some of which contain natural sweeteners, notably Stevia eupatoria and Stevia rebaudiana, known under the generic name of stevias. Native to South America, this plant grows wild in meadows or mountain ranges, in a semi-arid climate. Its low carbohydrate content makes it a substitute for sucrose.
